Maui Memorial Medical Center has a long and proud history of serving the Maui community. It is the largest acute care hospital of the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) and the only full-service, acute care hospital on Maui. Founded in 1884 by Queen Kapiolani, the hospital became part of the County of Maui in 1927 and in 1998 was transferred into the HHSC system.

Today, Maui Memorial has grown into a 201-bed facility with nearly 1000 dedicated employees and 200 attending physicians, 90 percent of whom are board-certified. In the year 2004 there were 12,445 admissions and 22,185 Emergency Department visits.

A Master Plan for the timely expansion of the hospital was implemented in January 2005, and construction of Phase I is on schedule to be completed in the Fall of 2006.

Concurrently, an Emergency Department nursing station renovation was completed on March 21, 2005 and another $4.2 million ED/Urgent Care Expansion is set to begin in the latter half of 2006.

Maui Memorial Medical Center (MMMC) is licensed for 206 beds (185 acute and 21LTC) and now has nearly 1,000 employees. In fiscal year 2003-04, there were 12,692 admissions with 1,649 births and a total of 59,751 patient days. Its patient services include:

• Date MMMC was established – opened in 1884 as “Malulani” by Queen Kapiolani. In 1927, the County of Maui assumed financial responsibility for Malulani Hospital. In 1952, a new 140-bed Central Maui Memorial Hospital was opened. In 1966, operations were transferred to the State of Hawaii. In 1996, HHSC took over the administration of MMMC.
