Hilo Medical Center (HMC) is the largest facility in the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation. Established in 1897, HMC has grown from a 10-bed hospital, erected by the Hawaiian Government, to the present facility of 264 -licensed beds, consisting of 130 acute and 22 skilled nursing licensed beds including a 20-bed psychiatric unit, a separate 112 bed licensed extended care facility and an accredited home care agency. Built in 1984 next to the newly demolished “old hospital”, the facility sits on roughly 20.5 acres of land, adjacent to the picturesque Wailuku River. Also on the campus is the Hilo Surgical Associates’ office, Liberty Dialysis Center, the Veteran’s Administration (VA) Community Based Outpatient Clinic and the medical center's Hawaii Pacific Oncology Center.

Hilo Medical Center had 6,778 acute admissions and 665 skilled nursing and intermediate care admissions this past year. In addition, HMC delivers over 1,100 babies, has over 29,600 emergency visits (second busiest in the state, after Queens Medical Center on Oahu), and provides surgical services for over 3,600 people each year. Continuing to meet the health needs of our region, HMC has embarked on a strategy to extend and enhance services, particularly outpatient services, currently provided. Emergency Department - Hilo Medical Center, in conjunction with the Hilo Medical Center Foundation and Architects Hawaii, Ltd., completed the design of the Emergency Department Renovation/Expansion in the latter part of 2005 and is currently soliciting proposals for construction as well as construction project management.
