Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) oversees the operations of 12 public health facilities (11 hospitals and 1 free-standing, long term care facility) throughout the Hawaiian Island chain, including Oahu, Lanai, Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. HHSC is organized into five operational regions:

The Hawaii Health Systems Corporation was established by the Hawaii State Legislature in 1996 to more efficiently and effectively manage and operate the twelve community-based hospitals in the State. Today, Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) is the fourth largest public healthcare system in the United States, and in Hawaii, the single largest provider of long-term care services and collectively the largest provider of emergency services. HHSC has successfully restructured the twelve acute and long-term care hospitals of the State into five regions providing quality healthcare to the Neighbor Island communities, thereby greatly enhancing the inter and intraregional operational support and fiscal efficiency of those hospitals. All twelve HHSC hospitals are fully licensed and certified or accredited by a state or federal accrediting organization, and in 2002 and 2005, several HHSC hospitals achieved some of the highest scores ever attained by a public hospital system anywhere in the nation. HHSC has received certification as a Critical Access Hospital, accreditation from the joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, and recognition as the “Best Healthcare Project” at the World Energy Engineering Congress in Atlanta for HHSC’s co-generation projects. The highly trained medical and nursing staff and other key health professional staff working at six HHSC hospitals were publicly recognized by HMSA for their continuous development and improvement of clinical and nonclinical quality programs and for the excellent results achieved by those facilities in the HMSA Quality and Service Recognition Program. As a public hospital, HHSC has been remarkably successful in receiving input and support from its local communities, including the benefit of 100,000 service hours donated by hundreds of community volunteers statewide in the past year alone.
